Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr Chew Chee Ping is an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon subspecialising in shoulder, knee, and arthroscopic sports surgery. With accreditation from the Ministry of Health (MOH) and extensive fellowship training, he brings a wealth of expertise to his practice. Nothing makes his day like seeing patients getting better after treatment.

Before private practice, he was the pioneer Clinical Lead of the Sports Service at Sengkang General Hospital and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at both Sengkang General Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. He managed a wide range of cases, from elderly patients with degenerative conditions to competitive national athletes with acute injuries.

Dr Chew obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2003. He completed his specialist training in Singapore and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Orthopaedics) in 2014.

Under an MOH scholarship, he pursued a one-year clinical fellowship at Charité-Universitätsmedizin in Berlin, Germany. There, he trained under renowned surgeons such as Prof Markus Scheibel and Prof Carsten Perka, specialising in shoulder and knee surgery (including both open and arthroscopic techniques) as well as lower limb arthroplasty. He further honed his skills through an AO Trauma Fellowship with Prof Ralph Hertel in Bern, Switzerland, focusing on managing shoulder injuries and degenerative conditions.

Returning to Singapore, Dr Chew assumed a leadership role as the head of the Sports Service at Sengkang General Hospital, contributing to the establishment of the hospital’s orthopaedic department and services, particularly in the field of arthroscopic and minimally invasive knee and shoulder surgery. He has managed a wide range of cases, from elderly patients with degenerative conditions to competitive national athletes with acute injuries.

Dr Chew has received numerous service quality awards, including the “Service with a Heart Award” at Singapore General Hospital in 2014 and the “You Sparkle! Silver Award” at Sengkang General Hospital in 2017. He has also served as faculty in local and regional  courses on trauma and shoulder arthroscopy.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Chew actively participates in the medical community. He has chaired and been invited as faculty for local and regional courses on trauma and shoulder arthroscopy. He frequently conducts workshops for General Practitioners and delivers public and corporate talks on various orthopaedic topics. Dr Chew’s commitment to advancing the field is evident through his presentations at international conferences and his publications in esteemed, peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals. Recognizing his contributions, he has served as a specialty reviewer for both local and international journals and was honoured with the “Reviewing with Distinction Award” by the Singapore Medical Journal for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017.

Dr Chew specialises in a broad range of procedures. These include knee arthroscopic surgery to address ligament, meniscus, and cartilage injuries, as well as knee preservation surgery like knee osteotomies. He is skilled in knee joint replacements and shoulder arthroscopic surgery for conditions like instability, rotator cuff tendon injuries, and frozen shoulder. He also performs shoulder joint replacements and treats issues like tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, sports-related ankle injuries, ankle arthroscopy, and ankle ligament reconstruction.

Moreover, Dr Chew is well-versed in managing various general orthopaedic conditions. These encompass back and neck pain, sciatica (nerve impingement), bunions (hallux valgus), trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, and abnormalities such as lumps and bumps on the extremities, among others.

Outside of work, Dr Chew enjoys reading a good book with a cup of tea. He also likes travelling and is looking forward to another hike in a national park.
